The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 are unprecedented. Never before has one event, with the possible exception of Pearl Harbor, created such disarray in the United States. Even after
President Kennedys death, the nation only stopped shopping for a few days, and then everything went back to what was thought to be normal. Things would never be the same
again. The sensibilities of a public that worshiped the Kennedy clan were startled, but the nation recovered quite rapidly and thought it was a pity but nothing that could not
be gotten over. The murderer was in jail and while there would be further assassinations in the tumultuous sixties, the United States economy would not come to a halt. Things
are different in 2001. The shock of the terrorist attacks not only set up a situation where people were glued to their television
sets but also one where there was an immense loss of life. The sudden fear of flying created a dismal state of affairs for airlines and soon the government would
create a bailout package for them. Restaurants in New York City were empty as was Broadway. Although the stock market would eventually rebound, its unprecedented closure and free fall shortly
after it reopened, created panic for some. And while what occurred during the aftermath was temporary, the economic effects would persist for weeks. Some predict they will last a very
long time as it will take time to rebuild New York. In September of 2001, consumer spending did fall at its fastest pace
