most significant elements of Doggett et als New World of Wonders is the somewhat unexpected connection with Shakespeare: one tends to think of latter as typically English and the exhibits
in New World of Wonders as demonstrating the links between other European countries, and the Americas. However, one of the more incongruous images in the exhibition is the Indian king
of what is now Brazil being presented to Englands King Henry VIII, in 1530 - something which impresses upon us that Columbuss voyages did, after all, take place in Shakespeares
era. The voyages to the New World were the original of exotic "Indian" dress into contemporary drama, and it is suggested that Shakespeare created Caliban after reading accounts of encounters
with the Indians. The aim of New World of Wonders
is not, therefore, to offer an objective account of the discoveries of the colonial explorers but rather to show how those discoveries were perceived by the Europeans left at home,
as written accounts and pictorial images gradually began to filter back to them. New world or not, the denizens of the Old World tried to fit the new discoveries into
their existing worldview. The maps made at the time, for example, show the difficulties the cartographers had with accurately representing the new countries in conjunction with the parts of the
world already known: clearly, it was not India, but what was it? There is no frame of reference for the cartographers to employ, and so they are left floundering.
