a danger to the established order (Riesen 341). It is as if Jesus knew that the import of his words would bring important messages to future generations of believers, as
these passages carry thematic messages that can be applied to the contemporary world. For example, New Testament thematic messages are applicable to the trends affecting evangelism in Africa. Before examining
these trends, however, it is illuminating to examine an instance in the New Testament where Jesus dealt with political confrontation. Matthew 22:15 tells of how Pharisees confronted Jesus and
asked if he considered that it to be lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar (Hamm 30). In explaining Jesus well-known answer, Dennis Hamm points out that this in
this serious political confrontation, Jesus indicated that in the reality of human society, the "world is not divided into one part God (however large) and one part (however small)
for Caesar" (Hamm 30). Rather, all of creation is under Gods sovereignty (Hamm 30). As this suggests, Jesus indicated how the religious and the political are often interwoven, which is
a fact demonstrated repeatedly in Africa. Today, two worlds collide in the sub-Sahara desert as evangelists aggressively endeavor to convert the people of other faiths, including Islam, to Christianity (Balint-Kurti).
This resulting tension can escalate into violence and even war, as it has done in 21-year civil war in Sudan, which began when an Arab government imposed Islamic law on
