to the people, both North and South. The following paper examines some of the technology that was involved during the Civil War. New Technology and the Civil War
In terms of the new technology that made this war very different from any other war there were many new things, and many
new things that seemed to lead to the further development of new possibilities, especially in terms of weaponry. The Railroad was not new when the Civil War broke out but
it was used to its fullest capability during the Civil War and thus was used, for the first time, in warfare. There was the telegraph which was new, the creation
and use of mines, the creation and use of submarines and ironclad water vessels, rifles and repeating guns, and even hor air balloons.
All of these different forms of new technology not only improved fighting ability and intelligence gathering, but they also likely proved to be overwhelming for the soldiers because there
were simply too many new things, new approaches, and as such this often led to confusion and as such proved detrimental in many respects. For example, one author notes, "Railroads
and emerging industrial capacity in both North and South made resupply and redeployment of armies easier, extending the duration of the war and killing" (Faust, 2008; 4). In addition, "Changing
military technology equipped these mass armies with new, longer-range weapons-muzzle-loading rifles-and provided some units, by the latter stages of the war, with dramatically increased firepower in the form of breech-loading
