of new products to market with reduced lead times and an greater need for integration between the buyers and suppliers to ensure the supply matches the demand. At the same
time there are the traditional pressures to increase efficiency. The issue used to be the speed of the supply chain, but now there are many examples of the way that
changes in the way operations take place need to be matched by changes in the supply chain. The greater use of outsourcing
means that less of the process takes place on a companys own premises; the potential for major bottlenecks is greater as the ability to hold a supply of the inputs
is more limited. The control over the supply chain may also be seen as a risk as it becomes more important to efficient operations.
Where there are still inputs of the basic components it is possible these are specific to only a single buyer, to obtain a supply the buyer will have
to collaborate with a potential supplier. This is also seen further down the supply chain as there is increased demand by end users for products that are customized. Although not
in the article provided by the student a good example of this was Nike and their customizable trainers where buyers chose their soles, uppers stitching and could even have initials
stitched onto the heal. The importance of studying supply chain models may reflect changes in technology and the continual pressure for increased efficiency,
