kind of areas which such theories would explore in relation to a literary text. For example, the operation of power is an important factor, in terms of the power relations
which can be found within the text, whether these are portrayed overtly or implicitly, and the elements which pose a threat to the exercise of power. It is also helpful
to consider the way in which authority and subversion interact, particularly in the light of known historical and cultural factors which might be considered as influential upon the text. Since
it is evident that any literary text will reveal something of the interrelationship between language, knowledge and power within the cultural ideology it portrays, it can also be assessed in
terms of how well it portrays a historically specific model of the period, especially in reference to its construction of power relations and human behaviour.
The New Historicist perspective is also concerned to a great extent with
the minutiae of the text, in the sense that the emphasis is not so much on the broad strokes of political history, but on the small and apparently minor details
which make up the spectrum of everyday life of the period. Spiegel (1997), for instance, makes the point that one can see such texts as both works of art and
social constructions which have their origin in a specific historical context, and that it is possible to analyse them in terms of both these aspects simultaneously. She also notes that
