many powerful film movements throughout the 20th century and during the 1970s a truly powerful movement began which is often referred to as New German Cinema. The following paper examines
this movement, its relationship to auteur cinema and the directors, or filmmakers, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Wim Wender, and Volker Schlondorff. New German Cinema
Numerous German filmmakers were known to be "the masters of the gaze -namely filmmakers-" who used "the cinema to visually engage and expose power as it takes shape
on the screen and as it acts through the gaze" (Novero). In relationship to the post war cinema one finds that Germany "intertwines with the search for new film styles,
new genres and new subjectivities" which ultimately led to the New German Cinema and clearly a powerful form of auteur cinema. In understanding
the New German Cinema it is important to perhaps examine some aspect of auteur cinema. Auteur cinema is essentially that which involves a film from the perspective of the director
himself/herself. Through the directing the director becomes the author of the story, presenting the images and ideals they feel are important to impart. One can see such a perspective in
many different directors today, and in the past. One notable director from the past is Alfred Hitchcock who would take a story and ultimately make it his own through his
directing of the film. One could say that today Spielberg is such a director or Scorsese. In essence it is the director taking the story and making it their own
story through their directing style. While there are more elements to the term or theory, this information establishes the foundation of the theory and plays into the New German Cinema.
