use radiation when taking X-Rays of the teeth and mouth. They claim that it is necessary because they cannot see what is happening under the gum line. With X-Rays, they
can tell whether a tooth is growing well or whether or not it is dead. Painful problems can be ameliorated by looking at the mouth with the use of radiology.
Yet, while people are used to having X-rays taken, they rarely stop and think about the history of X-rays and how recent developments had changed this invention a great deal.
Today, dental x-rays are common, but this was not always the case. While radiology is a good thing and helps doctors and dentists enormously, it can be harmful. Dentists
really do not know exactly how X-rays harm the body, but there are two mechanisms that do cause damage, one of which is direct damage and the other is indirect
damage (Waites 30). Direct damage causes problems directly to the cell (Waites 30). Indirect damages "the cell as a result of the ionization of water or other molecules within the
cell" (Waites 30). While high doses of radiation can cause serious damage, dental radiation only includes a small risk (Waites 32). While that is the case, improvements have been
made in respect to radiation. New developments in terms of new machinery have improved the way of life for patients today. No matter what equipment is used in the dental
