care for the adult is focused on only one thing: increased, intense care for a body in life-threatening crisis. Of course there is more to this single patient
than his current crisis, but none of that is of concern to the critical care nurse at the time that the crisis is at its peak. There will be
time to learn about the patients personality and swap magazines later, provided that the care the patient receives during this time of crisis is sufficient to put the crisis at
bay and see it abated. As a nursing theory based on systems thinking and on the interaction of systems within and around the

care is not one of them. Relevance of Nursing Theory As is the case with
all other patients, the critical care patient is a collection of systems in the same manner as are other patients. The interaction of those systems are of far less
importance in the immediate nature of the patients problems, however. In critical care, theory can wait. Nurses need to be focused solely on addressing critical care issues as
they arise. Much of todays theories of nursing are wellness - rather than illness - models. They focus their efforts on education
