in unison and much has to do with the goals of an organization and how much money it has to spend. Comprehending the validity and function of the NOS is
therefore crucial. A Network Operating System (NOS) is really just a group of software programs that control the operation of a network (Morse, 1996). Some of the programs
contained in such a system manage the sharing of files as well as peripherals across the network (1996). The machines in which they are present are called servers (1996). A
server is actually a computer system in a network that shares its resources with other computers (1996). Servers essentially have storage space and they can in fact be hubs in
a sense. However, a server may be a PC, a workstation or a mainframe (1996). There are different kinds of servers. A file server for example stores applications or
files and a print server obviously allows compeers all on the same LAN (local area network) to use a common printer. The programs that enable computers to utilize the shared
systems are called clients and this arrangement allows one to access resources on the computers while coworkers are able to access the computer, printer and modem (1996). The ability to
utilize variables simultaneously is important. One can see that the different network operating systems converge to complement one another, each performing a different function. A network operating system should
allow more than just file and printer sharing as it should provide a good level of manageability, and bring a network of disparate workstations together, something that might make
an administrators job easier (Harbaugh, 1999). How does one decide which operating system is best? How does one decide what is actually necessary for a particular business? Harbaugh recommends asking
