that is described in this paper, the attending nurses are compelled by the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics to acknowledge and respect the autonomy of parents in making
vital decisions for their child. On the other hand, the nurses are equally compelled by the Code to protect the interests of the newborn and try to avoid any unnecessary
suffering by the baby. Case scenario The case concerns a 26-year-old woman who went into labor after only 23 weeks gestation. Her membranes broke, so medication to delay delivery
was not an option. The physician and nurse handling the case explained the chances of survival and the long-term complications for an infant delivered so early in a pregnancy, as
well as resuscitation and other procedures that may be needed at delivery. The parents instruct the staff to use resuscitation or any other procedure needed so the baby will live.
After 9 hours of labor, the baby is delivered, weighing 425 grams, with minimal respiration and heart rate of 70 beats per minute. Full resuscitation is performed and the baby
is taken to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). As the baby does not do well, further discussion are held with the parents about stopping treatment; however, the parents
insist that full intervention for their baby should continue. The Ethics Committee is consulted, informed about the case, and they meet with the parents. While the Ethics Committee fully informs
the parents about their childs situation, the parents stand firm on their desire to see that everything possible is done to care for their child. Treatment continues and fourteen hours
