she reflects the earnest desire to survive. It was while writing Moll Flanders that Defoe gained significant insight as to the perceived value of class, gender and social stature,
particularly from understanding about those who did not possess socially and individual freedom: poverty-stricken women of the eighteenth century England. The product of indigence, Moll learns to manipulate the
system to her advantage. It is not long before she understands the importance of money and how easily it is for an attractive, cunning woman to earn it.
