Mandelas autobiographical work, A Long Walk to Freedom, is an account of his experiences in South Africa under apartheid, and the way in which he, the ANC and other anti-apartheid
movements succeeded in overcoming the white-dominated racist regime and establishing a multi-racial society in the country after many years of political struggle. Much of the book was written while he
was serving a 27-year jail sentence on Robbin Island, and it gives a detailed and fascinating picture not only of the history of South Africa up until the late 1990s,
but also a great deal of insight into the character and personality of Mandela himself.
Mandela was the son of a tribal chief, and grew up in the double world of his tribal family and the white-dominated apartheid of
South Africa as a whole, where black people were treated as second-class citizens in all aspects of society. He was qualified in law, and became actively involved in politics as
a young man, and was a founder member of the African National Congress (ANC) which supported non-violent protests against racism and discrimination. However, in 1960 the ANC was banned and
in 1963 he and many other ANC leaders were tried for crimes against the regime. The Rivonia trial became famous around the world.
