After the fall of apartheid came the real test, and Mandela demonstrated himself to be a man of compassion as well as strong conviction. He sought to unite his post-apartheid country rather than divide it, winning for himself an effectively-governed country as well as the Nobel prize for peace in 1993, followed by being elected to the presidency of South Africa in 1994. than 27 years in prison. Winning the election may have been rather anti-climatic, however, after winning the Nobel Prize for peace in 1993.
This was the order of events in the life of Nelson Mandela that were more than only significant. Mandela summarized his life in a single sentence when accepting
the Nobel peace prize: "We speak here of the challenge of the dichotomies of war and peace, violence and non-violence, racism and human dignity, oppression and repression and liberty and
human rights, poverty and freedom from want" (Nelson Mandela: The Nobel Peace Prize 1993, 1993). All of these Mandela addressed not only before, during and after his prison terms,
but also during his time as president of South Africa. The purpose here is to provide a brief overview of the life of
Nelson Mandela. It is not a "complete" biography in that it is so brief and in light of the fact that Mandela still remains with us. The reporters
qualifications are limited to the ability to effectively search the Internet. Mandela preached the gospel of equality for decades, finally winning the ability to put it into practice as
