from what seems to be Simons desire "to seek a greater resonance between his plays and his most personal recollections," which is connected to a yearning for the "respect that
accrues to a creator who examines himself" (Henry 72). The first play in the trilogy is Brighton Beach Memoirs, which draws on Simons memories of growing up in Brooklyn
in the 1930s in a lower-class Jewish family (Henry 72). It won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play. Likewise, Biloxi Blues also met with critical acclaim
when it opened, winning two Tony awards, one for Best Play and one for Best Director. The third, and concluding play, in Simons retrospective look at his life is Broadway
Bound. In the 1984 production of Biloxi Blues, Matthew Broderick reprised his role as Eugene Morris Jerome (Broderick won a Tony for playing the same character in Brighton Beach
Memoirs). In Biloxi Blues, Simon reunited the talents of Broderick with director Gene Saks to tell the next installment of Eugenes life, which sends Eugene to basic training in Mississippi
towards the end of World War II. In Biloxi, Mississippi, Eugene faces "authority and danger, anti-Semitism and assimilation" (Henry 72). Eugenes experiences also include romance. He loses his virginity in
a brothel, more as a rite of passage than for pleasure, and then rediscovers innocence in the caste embrace of a young Catholic girl (Henry 72). In this play,
