who weeps and goes into days of mourning and fasting (Nehemiah 1:4). Nehemiah also prays fervently to God, confessing his sins and the sins of his "fathers house," begging for
forgiveness (Nehemiah 1:5-11). It is after his prayer that we learn he holds a position of great trust and some prestige as "cupbearer to the king" (Nehemiah 1:11). When
the king asks why he is so sad, Nehemiah tells him of the troubles in Jerusalem and also explains that he would like to travel there to rebuild the wall
and gate (Nehemiah 2:1-5). When the king agrees, Nehemiah requests letters from him to assure his safe passage through hostile regions (Nehemiah 2:6-8). The king has asked how long it
will take him to do what he needs to do and get back (Nehemiah 1:6). As we know, it took Nehemiah 52 days to rebuild the wall (Nehemiah 6:15). Nehemiah
had not held any position of leadership, he was the wine taster for the king but he had been called by God to complete this task and he did so.
His leadership style can be described in numerous ways. He was a visionary (Nehemiah : A Visionary Leader), one of the most essential attributes of a leader in any time.
