Of course, coming to a firm conclusion is easier said than done. In Fisher & Urys (1991) classic book on negotiation, the model is quite different from the usual fare of negotiation technique. Authors explain from the outset that negotiation as it is conducted in general is flawed (1991). In hard negotiations, people pick a position and fight for it (1991). Only one party wins, or there is no agreement at all (1991). One is reminded of the haggling when purchasing a car. The buyer pretends to walk out or go elsewhere and then the salesman quickly lowers the price or throws in something else. For more important arguments, a husband and wife may each take a position on child rearing. Because their positions are juxtaposed, and they each argue vehemently that they are right, it is more likely than not that an agreement will not be reached. What authors do is to come up with a solution to the problem or a new negotiation technique. Fisher and Ury (1991) explain that the solution is to change the process and negotiate on the merits of the problem.
