struggle for independence and autonomy is an ancient one. This poignant lament for a quarrelsome mountain people is as true for them today as it was 400 years ago.
They have had a long and bitter history filled with war and fighting and, while they remember it all, the battles, the wars, the hardship and deprivation, they do
not seem to have learned anything from any of it. Their negotiating style seems to be more one of "fight first, talk later" with a stalwart refusal to see
any other viewpoint than their own. This style, however, is not limited to their dealings with outsiders, such as Iraq and Iran.
They are a people who do not seem to have ever heard of the old adage, "A house divided cannot stand," for they have a long and continuous history
of fighting amongst themselves - of battles between clans and numerous feuds. The Kurds live in a mountain range, known as
the Land of Insolence, which runs along southeastern Turkey into Syria, Iraq, Iran, and on into part of Armenia (Painton, PG). There is a good bit of irony in
the name of this mountain range, for it aptly describes the Kurdish way of dealing with themselves and others. They are a fiercely independent people who will bow to
no one (Mason, PG). Its as if they know - or understand - nothing of any other way of life other than war and, if they arent fighting with outside
