two adults love each other and want to provide the best for the children. This paper examines the idea that being raised by a single female parent has a negative
impact on girls. Discussion Its been proven in numerous studies that girls reach puberty at an earlier age than boys, "become sexually active earlier and are more likely to get
pregnant if their father was absent from the home when they were young."1 However, the reason usually given for such pregnancies, that the fatherless family is under more stress than
one in which both parents are present, is being challenged by a study done with girls in the United States and New Zealand, the two Western countries that have the
highest rate of teenage pregnancy.2 It appears that the household without a father is also a household that has less income, and a "greater chance of other disadvantages, such
as domestic violence or a depressed mother.3 According to the stress theory, the situation in the household causes a response in the girls of the family that ensures they "pass
on their genes" when times are difficult.4 This is a very odd hypothesis, since there seems to be no reasonable correlation between a difficult home life and a need to
procreate; its reasonable to assume that a girl living in such a house might indeed want to escape from it, but having a child seems an odd development. However, we
are not here to critique the stress theory but to discuss the problems of girls without fathers present; the stress theory might prove a useful topic for further research. At
