environment in which the mother lives, perhaps stressful, can influence the development of an unborn child. And many believe that a nurturing and loving environment, where unborn infants are spoken
to and sung to and read to, can influence and impact an unborn child in many positive ways. But, there is one element of the environment that has come under
recent examination as it involves an unborn child. Apparently pollution has many negative impacts on an unborn child. The following paper examines this threat to the unborn child.
Negative Impact of Pollution on Unborn Children In recent studies, one dating back to 2004, "Unborn babies are particularly sensitive to cancer-causing pollutants
found in the air, report researchers who studied pregnant women and their newborn babies" (Bio-Medicine, 2004). As is often the case with research animals, in this case mice, were used
first in examining the concern and it was discovered that pollution was far more harmful to the fetuses than it was to the mothers of the unborn (Bio-Medicine, 2004). This
seems to be the case "despite the fact the placenta filters out most of the pollutants" (Bio-Medicine, 2004). Now this was the case with the mice studied and so the
researchers desired to know if the same were true with humans (Bio-Medicine, 2004). "Researchers collected blood samples from 265 mothers and their newborn babies looking for biomarkers indicating exposure to
proteins known as carcinogen-DNA adducts, and cotinine, a component of cigarette smoke. All mothers in the study were nonsmokers...The infants actually had more cotinine in their systems than their mothers,
suggesting exposure to secondhand smoke is especially dangerous for pregnant women" (Bio-Medicine, 2004). This particular research thus examined and cautioned that unborn infants
