with African Americans (15 percent) and Caucasians (5 percent) making up the roughly one-quarter. Primarily, the students have a low-income socioeconomic background. There were 15 survey participants: 14 women and
one man. Fourteen of the participants were teachers and the principal also participated. Eleven of the participants hold Masters degrees, and the remaining 4 have Bachelor of Arts degrees. The
number of teachers at each grade level are as follows: 3 Kindergarten; 3 first grade; 3 second grade; 1 ESL teacher; 1 reading teacher; 1 teacher each for music, art
and gym and the principal. Five participants are between the ages of 25-34; 3 are between 35-44; and 8 are between the ages of 45-70. The inclusion of the
principal in this survey is significant to the topic under investigation as administrators play an active role in the integration of technology into school culture. The Technology Standards for School
Administrators (TSSA) indicates that school administrators should be knowledgeable in all aspects of technological literacy so that this educational leader can model the use of technology as well as ensure
that it is implemented with the classroom environment (TSSA, 2001). The first subject area surveyed pertained to computer knowledge. The questions addressed the participants ability in the following areas: start
up and shut down a computer; use of the mouse, navigate within windows; open a program; move between windows; select and use a printer; email and open an email; compose
and send an email; reply to and open an email; send an email with an attachment; review an attachment; open a web browser; access a specific web site by
entering the correct URL in the address bar; create and use a favorite; use help (including online resources; and conduct a simple search, using a search engine such as Google.
