of the great inventions and inventors are a thing of the past. Brantley asserts that truly useful inventions have already been invented, that there is none of mans needs
and wants that have not already been addressed. Likewise, Brantley insists, the truly great inventors of yesteryear are no longer. While Brantley is successful in making his views
regarding inventions and inventors known, he is unsuccessful in convincing the reader that he is right Brantleys essay is simply a statement of
his personal opinion. He offers no real facts to back u that opinion and leaves the reader disagreeing in particular with the concept that all of mans desires and
needs have already been addressed. In fact plenty of inventions are still needed. Not only do we need more fuel efficient vehicles, we need workable alternative energy sources.
Our global environment is being threatened on many fronts. Our petroleum dependent lifestyles are the basis for many of those threats. The emission of wastes products from
our consumption of fossil fuel makes acid rain and global warming very real hazards, the effects of which we are currently experiencing and which will continue to grow in their
impact. Additional effects of fossil fuel dependence are even more straightforward. The ecological complexity of natural areas which have been mined for their fossil fuels is no more.
Mining does irreparable damages to the worlds critical ecosystem. Obviously, our nations, and indeed the worlds, dependence on fossil fuel is a dependence which has cost us much
both economically and ecologically. Fossil fuels are a finite resource, once they are gone they are gone. We must identify alternative energy sources and make a transition towards
