matter its size. Even sole proprietors often have to consult accountants because changing laws and regulations make it difficult for non-specialists to keep up. There are three major fields of
accounting, "public, management and government, and internal auditing. Like medicine or law, accounting is self-regulated by its own professional organizations" (Foster-Simeon 72). Public accountants work for themselves on a fee
basis for those who hire them; government and management accountants "work within an organization" and internal auditors "analyze and report on corporate financial and information reporting systems" (Foster-Simeon 72).
Obviously, someone who wants to break into this field needs special qualifications; today, an accounting hopeful usually needs at least a bachelors degree, in finance or accounting, to even get
that first interview. "And many employers are now looking for people to enter the field with a masters degree in business administration with a concentration in accounting" (Foster-Simeon 72). In
addition, many firms look at applications only if those applicants have a better than 3.2 GPA, along with a knowledge of computers and other business systems (Foster-Simeon 72). Certified
public accountants (CPAs) "receive greater recognition than other public accountants, both from the public and from other accounting professionals. The CPA candidate is awarded certification once he or she has
demonstrated mastery, of accounting skills in a five-part examination" (Foster-Simeon 72). There are many advantages to holding the CPA, including the fact that it is a proof of the accountants
