her family is incredibly poor. As a girl she is less likely to find opportunities than a boy and in many ways the best she can hope for is to
marry and have a family. Even this future, in her current situation, is not a truly positive future. The following paper presents an examination of this hypothetical young girl, her
life, and her future. Nawal In the impoverished regions of Africa there are a great many problems that the people face. They are often incredibly poor, with perhaps
the mother and father having to leave home in order to work. They have little or no health community and as such if they get sick they generally have no
hope but to see it through or die. There is also very little opportunity for education, and girls are less likely to obtain an education than boys. In Nawals case
her father is gone most of the time in a far off city, working to make a living. Her mother stays with her and her 4 siblings. They have no
property to cultivate. The nearest school is 3 miles away and her two older brothers go to school. Nawal is basically in charge of her two younger siblings when her
mother goes to the nearest town to find whatever work she can, normally doing small domestic chores for wealthier individuals. In essence, Nawal is a young child with the responsibilities
of an adult, a young child with no hope for education, and a young child who is greatly at risk. One of the most devastating realities in Africa at this
