are still perhaps highly controversial for many, as people argue that they are degrading to a culture or cultures, and that it is essentially an immoral and undesirable form of
revenue. The Navajo people of the nation have been, it seems, the last Native tribe to adopt the institution of gaming, long holding out and arguing against such development. But,
with the decision to build and open a Navajo casino in Church Rock, NM, just outside of Gallup, NM, that debate is clearly over. The following paper examines the issues
and argues that the opening of this casino, though long debated and disliked by many, is likely a very good thing for the Navajo people. Navajo Gaming As
mentioned, the Navajo people have long held out against the movement towards building casinos in order to create much needed economic revenue for the people of the Navajo Nation. For
years, decades, the Navajo people have essentially voted down any proposals for building a casino, or casinos, which is what all the other Native tribes in the country were doing.
There is also perhaps the negative, by association, realities that involve many tribes playing something of a land game with the government,
filing for the rights to land and then, as one author notes, "In virtually all these cases tribes have made clear that they would settle for a casino permit" (Olson).
This presents an image of the Native peoples that is not necessarily positive, nor one that it seems the Navajo people want to be associated with.
