(Johnson, 2002; alvar1CDV.HTML). Much of his journeys and experiences are illustrated in his work titled "Naufragios." This particular work has become an incredibly valuable historical and anthropological record of
natives prior to their destruction. In the following paper we examine the work of Nunez and illustrate how his work is invaluable to anthropologists studying ancient cultures as well as
present day cultures. Naufragios "Alvar Nunezs narrative about his odyssey through the southern part of North America is appreciated today mainly for its ethnographic realism in the description
of Native American cultures and for its apparently sympathetic pro-Indian attitudes" (Bauer, 2002; bauer.html). His time in this particular region lasted for approximately eight years wherein he "experienced hardships and
misfortunes that would have defeated a lesser man. He not only survived incredible odysseys in Texas and Mexico, which he later recorded in his Relaci?n (account), but also entered the
annals of colonial Texas as its first merchant, geographer, historian, ethnologist, and physician-surgeon" (Johnson, 2002; alvar1CDV.HTML). "Alvar Nu?ez joined the expedition of P?mfilo de Narvaez to Florida in 1526
as treasurer. With two other Spaniards and an Arab Moor, he was the only survivor who remained on the mainland," thus setting the stage for the next eight years of
roaming and adventuring (Anonymous Alvar Nu?ez Cabeza de Vaca, 2002; 03126c.htm). It was only through Nunez diligence and determination that he and his fellow adventurers survived in the harsh country,
