environment. Our genetic makeup obviously does determine a great deal about who we are and to some degree it even limits what we can achieve in life. Our
environment, on the other hand, can be a much more important factor in our lives than our genetics. Briski and Kaufmanns "Born into Brothels: Calcuttas Red Light Kids"
serves as an excellent example of the validity of this contention. Released in 2005, "Born into Brothels" provides a look into
the lives of some of the most destitute members of world society, the prostitutes and families that live and work in the red light district of Calcutta India. In
particular, this film provides insight into the feelings of helplessness that characterize the children that live in this environment. Most disturbingly, however, this film demonstrates that, even when outside
forces enter into the equation to try to turn around an individuals or group of individuals life, not all will take advantage of the opportunities that arise.
The children in the brothels of Calcutta are seemingly caught up in a vicious circle. No matter what they do their lives seem etched out
in stone. The girls destiny is particularly concerning. Unless something miraculous happens, they are destined to follow their mothers and their grandmothers into prostitution. Sitja, only eleven
years old is facing that reality head on. When asked if she sees any way to change her life, her answer is a very simple "No". Tapasi, even
younger, confesses that she loves her mother even when she calls her horrible things. At the same time, however, she admits that her mother is getting older every day.
