has shaped views of instructional modalities, psychological assessments and strategies based on shifting environmental focus. In understanding the influences of nature and nurture, it is beneficial first to define
these terms and relate the definitions to the development of young children. Definition of Nature and Nurture As previously stated, the influences of nature on psychological and cognitive development
are perceived as those factors that re related to a childs innate characteristics, linked to biological structure (Dever & Falconer, 2008). Essentially, a childs innate self is defined at
birth. Nature focuses on the belief that children are born with specific talents, learning abilities, and predilections that define how they interact and function in a range of
settings, including the classroom. For example, twin girls in a kindergarten classroom may have been raised in the same family, raised by the same parents, and experience the same
interactions on a regular basis, but their personalities may be very different. Those who support the conceptual view that nature has the greatest influence on psychological and cognitive development
maintain that these children experienced the same environmental factors and yet developed very different innate selves. The concept of nurture is often introduced in contrast to nature, maintaining
that environmental impacts are a greater factor in determining a childs psychological, social and cognitive development. Nurture is defined, then, as those environmental factors that impact a childs sense
