In regards to his ideas he felt that this perspective was important and very valid in the scientific field for "He intended that the social phenomenology be taken as parallel to individual phenomenology," a fact that could explain many approaches and be used to further endeavors of the field of science. Locke John Locke, as well as Thomas Hobbes, both of which were British philosophers, "took a more empirical approach emphasizing the role of experience as fully contributing to behavioral development" (The Nature Versus Nurture Debate, 2003). This clearly indicates that Locke was a man who felt that nurture was predominant in the development of an individual for experience is a form of nurture. "Lockes view that children were born as a blank slate placed an extreme emphasis on the environmental determinant of development. Locke described parents as rational tutors who could mold the child in any way they wished through careful instruction, effective example, and rewards for good behavior (Berk, 1997, p.10)" (The Nature Versus Nurture Debate, 2003). This would, in the mind of Locke, provide a valuable foundation from which the field of psychology could better understand people and their behavior.
