These two fundamental doctrines of Christianity are reconciled through the concept of the Trinity, which conceives of God as three individual entities, that can be described as the Father, Son and Holy Ghost (or Spirit), who share the same nature and, therefore, essentially "one." While this idea is familiar to Christians, to those people outside Christianity, it sounds as if Christians perceive of God not so much as a loving Father, but as a committee (Bolton, 2002). By examining church doctrine, history and current theology, it is possible to clarify what is meant by the concept of the Trinity. Church history is quite specific as to how the doctrine of the Trinity was formulated. Arius was the leader of one of the early Christian congregations in Alexandria, and he is credited with founding the doctrine of Arianism, aka the "Arian Heresy" (Bolton, 2002). Basically, Arianism holds that Jesus Christ was created by God the Father and was not co-eternal with the Father (Bolton, 2002). In other words, this belief states that Jesus did no pre-exist prior to his birth. Therefore, Arianism holds that Christ is not equal with God and, therefore, subject to the Father. This position was opposed by Athanasius, the deacon of the main church in Alexandria (Bolton, 2002). The Bishop of Alexandria, Alexander, heard both arguments and ordered Arius to stop teaching his doctrines, an order which Arius refused (Bolton, 2002). Because of his refusal, Arius had to give up his congregation. He left Alexandria and traveled to Palestine where he met the historian Eusebius, who had numerous connections with the church in the Eastern portion of the Roman Empire.
