For example, prejudice against people from Eastern and Southern Europe was rationalized based on their darker skin tones (Gans 268). Despite improvement in law and greater acceptance in mainstream society
of affluent blacks, having Negroid features continues to be taken by many white Americans as justifiable evidence to suspect that person of criminal or pathological behavior that is actually evident
only in a small percentage of the black population. The stories related to Joe Feagin by black participants in his study indicates that these people were the targets of discrimination
based purely on their race, regardless of their economic status or any other factor. In two of the stories, the ability of the black respondents to call upon middle-class resources
had a profound effect on the outcomes of their stories, but, nevertheless, the initial discriminatory action was based purely on their race. The prevalence of this experience suggests while discriminatory
behavior can be addressed, the likelihood of it being eliminated in US society in the near future is doubtful. Black "underclass"-racial discrimination, economic factors Detrimental conditions are part of
