Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 3 page essay that contrasts and compares 3 short stories. Elizabeth Tallent in "No One's a Mystery," Guy de Maupassant in "The Jewelry," and Ernest Hemingway in "Hills Like White Elephants" each picture people who are, presumably, in the midst of a deeply romantic relationship. They are in love. While society tends to picture love as altruistic and uncomplicated, these writers show another side to intimate relationships, one that includes infidelity, failures to communicate, and frank self-centered manipulation of the beloved to suit one's one ends. No additional sources cited.
