of nature and their ability to use this love to highlight central themes in human nature. For instance, in A Noiseless, Patient
Spider, Whitman aptly unites the theme of nature to the experience of the human soul, using the vastness of nature as a unifying element. In this way, Whitman illustrates
the means by which the vastness of nature can penetrate the living as can the infinite individuality of aloneness as well. Whitman states, "it stood, isolated", just as he
later states, "till the gossamer thread you fling, catch somewhere, O my Soul". These lines focus on how Whitman employs the
use of nature to reveal man to himself. It is evident that Whitman believes that the fundamental principles of life are gifted by nature herself, as evidenced when he
states, "Till the bridge you will need, be formd-till the ductile anchor hold". In other words, Whitman contends that what we need, nature provides. It is true for
the spider and it is true for man as well. Obviously, he doesnt actually say this specifically but he instead illustrates it through the metaphors he chooses and his
ability to link nature to the soul of man. Frost too illustrates a very deep regard for nature in his work,
