The mid nineteenth century, however, is particularly interesting in this regard. By 1840 many things were changing in regard to our societal definitions of what it was to be
American. This was a turbulent period, only some two decades before the Civil War would break out. Some were deeply searching for their place in a sequence of
events and circumstances that would, in fact, better define just what it was to be an American. Many wrote of their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Some of these
writings actually took us into the opening chapters of the Civil War itself. These writings not only defined particular individuals at particular points in time but undoubtedly had a
tremendous impact on other great Americans for whom nature would ultimately become a primary focus in their lives. Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry
David Thoreau are, of course, among the most notable in regard to how their perceptions of nature blended significantly with their perceptions of their and their fellow countrymens Americanness.
Emerson is noted for his philosophies for self reliance and independence, philosophies that have been integrally tied to Americanness since the very beginning of this countrys history. Emerson is
also noted for his preference for the simpler things in life and for his love of nature. This is evidenced as well by his long term friendship and mentorship
of the famous Henry David Thoreau who, like Emerson, would become noted for his nature writings and back-to-the land philosophy. Thoreau is also remembered for his penchant
for effecting change through civil disobedience, an approach that has since been taken by many important American activists. Many of Emersons literary works
