stress" became a popular form of artistic expression. There is perhaps no one more closely associated with this period of psychological fiction than Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), whose
fertile imagination was frequently sidetracked by bouts of illness and depression. His intensely personal works were manifestations of his own suffering and inner turmoil. Goethe believed that man
and nature were virtually inseparable since all perceptions were obtained through the senses, which were rooted in nature. In his masterpiece, The Sorrows of Young Werther, through a series
of his protagonists letters spanning from May 4, 1771 until late December 1772, Goethe explores mans relationship with nature, and what evolves is a series of mirrored images as Werther
experiences a torrent of emotions from the heights of ecstasy to the depths of crushing anguish, which are reflected in his natural surroundings. Werther is a struggling artist, and his
passions are documented in his correspondence. His life represents the human experience and mans quest to find satisfying and lasting love. In a letter to his friend Wilhelm,
dated May 4, 1771, Werther expresses regret over breaking a young woman named Lenores heart. As is his custom, he seeks solace in nature: "Solitude is delicious balm to
my heart in this heavenly spot, and this youthful season pours the fullness of its warmth into my oft-shivering heart. Every tree, every hedge is a nosegay, and one
