and environment. The two are interdependent in shaping a childs personality and code of ethics. The environment, however, may be more influential in a childs moral development. The terms nature
and nurture are no more than catchy phrases but everyone knows what they mean. Nature really refers to heredity and genetics. Nurture refers to the environment in which one was
raised. Scientists believe that we have predispositions for certain behaviors and personality traits. This would be part of the nature argument. As scientists unravel the human genome, they are finding
there are inborn traits and even abilities, like singing (Powell, 2006). Nurture or the environment may very well develop these tendencies or predispositions through caring. The nature theory is based
on heredity. As noted, it is clear that we inherit certain things but more recent research is also confirming that abstract traits, "such as intelligence, personality, aggression, and sexual orientation"
(Powell, 2006) may be part of a persons genetic code. Presently, scientists are looking for behavioral genes, which would present some serious problems in the criminal justice system (Powell, 2006).
Consider criminals who could blame their crimes on their DNA. Several years ago, scientists seemed to agree that sexual orientation is related to a gene (Powell, 2006). Numerous studies with
twins, both fraternal and identical, raised together and apart have shed some light on the issue of heredity. If personality traits and other intangibles were influenced exclusively by the environment,
