nature through such realities are rain or sunshine. In Herman Hesses Siddhartha and Albert Camus The Stranger the authors utilize nature in very different ways, but yet also in very similar ways. The following paper analyzes nature in the two stories. Nature: Hesse and Camus In looking at these two stories one notes that they are about very different people. Siddhartha is a young man seeking meaning and enlightenment while Camus young man, Meursault, is a man without any desires, any emotions, and any true mission in life. He is an existentialist to the extent that he is perhaps the ultimate nihilist as he seems to seek a complete lack of care or concern or need for anything in his life. Siddhartha seeks things, ultimately seeking enlightenment. In essence, as characters Siddhartha is an enjoyable and pleasant young man while Meursault seems cold and distant. But, in both of their paths lies the power of nature. While they are both different individuals they are also individuals who are seeking their own form of enlightenment and nature plays a very important role in this path. And, one could argue that nature offers a way of seeing how things are, for good or bad. In addition, nature is a teacher in both stories where the path of the character is involved. In the case of Siddhartha he is a young man who constantly notes the beauty of nature around him. He does not take it for granted it seems, although towards the beginning he simply appreciates it: "He saw the sun rising over the mountains with their forests and setting over the distant beach with its palm-trees.
