As deep ecologist Dolores LaChapelle (1988) commented: "How we see determines our relationship with the world (pp. 105). When a person focuses only on the larger picture of Earth as a backdrop for humanity, he or she loses the fundamental realization that the Earth is its own reality, separate and apart from the creatures who inhabit it. If that same individual were to take the time to carefully, and comprehensively observe the most minute of natural occurrences, it is unlikely they could ever see the world in the same dismissive fashion as before. According to Saito (1998), "appreciation of nature must include the moral capacity for acknowledging the reality of nature apart from humans and the sensitivity for listening to its own story" (pp. 135). Such an attitude regarding nature allows a person to look beyond preconceived notions and see the many stories of life (that human stories can only reflect) as they unfold in the context of the natural world. Once a person understands that all life on earth, not just human life, is dependent on the health and protection of the environment that sustains life, it is no longer possible to dismiss the planet as a nothing more than a static object designed to meet human needs and desires.
