With these perspectives in mind, as they relate to literature, the following paper examines naturalism in relationship to the film/book "Age of Innocence" and the film/book "The House of Mirth." Age of Innocence and The House of Mirth In the two stories under examination there are many aspects that speak of naturalism. In "Age of Innocence" there is a woman, Ellen, who is very much a woman of her own making in many ways. While she must remain true to some levels of society she is also one who understands that she must break away from that to some extent. In this we are seeing the naturalism needed to survive in society and play a particular role, but also the natural inclination to branch out and be more "natural." This struggle is also seen in the character of Archer who is intrigued by her uniqueness. He is stifled by society and by the demands place upon him, primarily that of marrying May who he sees as "the manufactured product of her class: polite, innocent, and utterly devoid of personal opinion and sense of self" (SparkNotes, 2005). He too, however, is ultimately controlled by the society despite his need to struggle against it and find his own identity.
