other European countries, France has in recent years come to adopt policies regarding land use, management of water resources and anti-pollution measures which focus strongly on sustainable development and the
protection of the environment. This can be seen, for example, in the way that water resource management is coordinated and implemented, and also in the way in which the sustainability
of forested areas is preserved. A recent report by the World Resources Institute (2002) sets out many of the ways in which France is taking steps to improve the environment,
and the areas in which the country has been less successful.
