each. Common consensus among most collegiate athletes is that playing sports on artificial sports is not only more exhaustive, it is more dangerous as well. According to some
scientific research, however, this is simply not the case, at least for football (Glauber, 1993). Research indicates that injury rates are not significantly different among players who play on
artificial turf and those who play on natural turf (Glauber, 1993). Other research refutes the above opinion, however. In the November-December 1993 issue of the American Journal
of Sports Medicine John Powell, a research associate and trainer at the University of Iowa and director of the leagues Injury Surveillance System, writes: "Overall, there is a tendency
for Astroturf to be associated with an increased risk for knee sprains and MCL (medial collateral ligament) and ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injuries under very specific conditions" (King, 1993, PG).
The question remains, however, as to whether it is the Astroturf itself which causes the problem or is it factors such as the choice of shoes worn
on the Astroturf (King, 1993). Powell presents the same question concluding: "It may be that participation on Astroturf is the most important of all risk factors or it
may be well down the list of importance... Further research is needed to resolve the issue" (King, 1993, PG). Regardless of the research indicating otherwise, common consensus
among players is that artificial turf takes more out of a player and in considerably more dangerous (Glauber, 1993). Players claim that artificial turf is hotter to play on
and takes a toll on their joints (Glauber, 1993). To find guidance for collegiate teams it is helpful to look to the pros (Glauber, 1993). Whether a
