However, at the same time most people believe that men and women are naturally different. They have different biological needs, drives, and instincts. This may well be true, but they
are not realities that should be relied upon in determining the status of men and women in society. For example, women are generally paid less than men for the same
work and women are seen as far more helpless than men in many situations, thus perpetuating the idea that men and women should possess a different status in society. The
following paper examines the idea of natural gender roles, indicating that men and women are equal, but different. Natural Gender Roles in Society In prehistoric times men and
women needed to have different status in a society. Women needed to bear the children and men needed to be strong enough to protect them from beasts and other dangers.
A woman who is pregnant or breastfeeding and caring for an infant is far more occupied with ensuring the safety and welfare of her child and is thus weak to
the outside dangers. As such men took on this important role and ensured the safety and the survival of their tribes. Such realities were necessary for many centuries as
the natural world held many different dangers for communities or societies. With warfare men naturally went off to fight and women stayed home to protect the family. Such perspectives are
not easily eliminated as mankind has evolved, despite the fact there are not the natural dangers there once were. Because men were needed to protect they also naturally seemed to
take on the role of leadership concerning societies and because women were still generally taking care of families they left that aspect of society to the men. However, today we
