that island. Like all of Micheners novels it is a powerful and intricate story of many different people as they adventure, travel, settle, love, grow and die. The following paper
examines the general values of the Natives and the Europeans within the novel. Natives and Europeans in Micheners Chesapeake As mentioned, Micheners novels are incredibly detailed and intricate
and rich and this novel is no exception. He is not an author who simply presents one sort of individual and thus one particular sort of value for a particular
people. He presents human beings and they are always rich and detailed in relationship to their perspectives, attitudes, and values. For example, not all Natives hold the same values or
dreams and likewise all the Europeans are not the same either. For example, there are individuals who are angry and bitter, regardless of their ethnicity or culture, and there are
those who are open minded and very human, so to speaks, also regardless of their ethnicity or culture. Micheners works always present the complexity of human beings, regardless of their
culture. As such this particular novel also presents many different perspectives and values. The novel essentially begins with the plight of Pentaquod a Native who is burdened with discord
that he does not enjoy or desire. His values are apparently different than his tribes and he leaves his tribe because of the warring and the discord. He is not
like his people and thus his values are clearly not like his peoples. In this the reader is presented with two different Native views in the beginning; a warring and
a peaceful collection of values. When he escapes he finds a place that seems to represent him and his values: "When he awoke he became aware of one of
