assume that the Four Directions refer to the four directions on a compass (north, south, east, west) they are actually far more symbolic and meaningful than that. They involve connections with color, attributes, and spirits. The following paper examines the meaning and significance of the Four Directions in Native American cultures. Native Americans: The Four Directions One author notes that the Four Directions are something that are also referred to, or include, the Four Quarters, Four Powers, and Four Winds (Blessings Cornucopia, 2008). In this respect one can see how "They are four equally important ways of perceiving things in life and of pursuing knowledge" (Blessings Cornucopia, 2008). They involve what is known as the Circle, which is a symbol utilized in many different ways by most cultures in the world, ancient and modern. Within this circle it seems there are "four cardinal points" which often represent different elements (Blessings Cornucopia, 2008). For example they can represent the stages of life, the essences of nature and their power, as well as the seasonal rhythms, which perhaps makes sense as there are four different seasons to the year (Blessings Cornucopia, 2008). In relationship to the directions and how they connect with the directions on a compass, there is North which can, according to the author quoted thus far, represent white, maturity, strength, wisdom, and stamina (Blessings Cornucopia, 2008). East is representative of gold, peace, eagle, clarity, illumination and clarity (Blessings Cornucopia, 2008). South stands for expansion, infancy, mouse, green, expectation, and wholesomeness (Blessings Cornucopia, 2008).
