The indigenous peoples of the Americas have suffered long and hard since their juxtaposition of their cultures against those of the predominantly European cultures that came to
dominant their lands. The most pronounced aspect of that suffering has been the loss of the lands that rightfully belonged to those people. An associated reflection of the
land loss has been a loss of control over their own affairs. Interestingly, however, Native Americans have consistently fought such losses. Over time they have made significant headway.
This is particularly true in regard to rights they have exerted thanks to sovereignty. The issue of sovereignty is one which likes
as the heart of Native American history in this country. Sovereignty entails that Native Americans a certain limited power to control their own destinies (Reid, Winton, and Gates, 2004).
Sovereignty entails that Native American nations are independent political entities. Sovereignty, by some definitions at least, was believed to have existed even prior to European contact with these
peoples and something which extended past that contact to present day (Reid, Winton, and Gates, 2004). By other definitions sovereignty was something that had been delegated in some way
