writers, anthropologists, archeo-logists, and other friends have insisted for years that it was my duty as an articulate Hopi to tell the world something of my cultural background and my long struggle to span the great and terrifying chasm between my Hopi world and the world of the white man (Qoyawayma). I am Hopi. Because I am Hopi, I have responsibilities. By breaking the cultural pattern of my own life I have, at least indirectly, helped to destroy it for the Hopi people as a whole. I know not where the bahoki has been taken, but I accept my responsibility in its disappearance. Would I be better off had I never broken away from my own heritage? Would I do it different if it were possible for me to live my life over? (Qoyawayma). A close reading of this passage suggests to the reader not specific details concerning Qoyawaymas personality, but it is also an intriguing passage in that it implies that there is an inherent opposition between the purposes of an autobiography, as seen from a Euro-American point of view, and the logistics of Hopi culture. The reader is immediately intrigued and begins to ask questions, such as: What does the author mean by saying that she has helped "to destroy" her Hopi culture? What does she mean by "breaking away" from her heritage? Looking closely at this passage, as well as consulting a secondary source, reveals some answers. First of all, the first section of this quoted passage immediately indicates to the reader that the writer has had extensive contact with the white world and its intellectual elite, as it is "writer, anthropologists and archaeologists" who have advised her to describe her Native American heritage.
