However, like any nation its culture is formed by a number of influencing, including the events and people in its past. The culture of the US is generally perceived and
predominately western and self determined as a result of its history and fight for independence. However, there are many influences on that culture which remain under appreciated, one source of
these influences are the Native American influences, which are seen in many areas of modern American culture. It may be argued that Native Americans were among some of the
earliest ecologists, protecting and respecting the earth. The culture was one where animals were not killed for sport, only that which was needed was taken and the values were to
live in harmony with the earth rather than strip its assets (Anderson, 2005). It is interesting to note that the word conservation did not even exist in the Anishinaabe
language (Mayer, 1999). In todays modern culture there is an increasing awareness of ecological issues, and while the origins of these concerns may not be solely with the influence on
culture, the links cannot be denied as changes and developments in culture reflect the multitude of influences. However the spiritual links re also being reflected in modern culture with the
search for a spiritual connection with the earth, which is a value being adopted and practiced by many US citizens. Food is also a part of the culture, eating
peanuts and popcorn when out, pumpkins used at Halloween and the cultural icon of fries. These all have Native American origins, they were foods available and used by the Native
Americans before the European settlers arrived, In many cases the European settlers learned from the natives what foods existing and how to use them, learning and adopting farming methods. Food
