patriotism. In essence, there is no one correct definition of the term because when examined under a microscope, different theorists have different views on the subject. Ritcheson (1996) for example explains: "Nationalism can be interpreted in two ways: as doctrine about the character, interests, rights and duties of nations; and as a description of an organized political movement designed to further the alleged aims and interests of nations seeking independence or national unity" (p.85). Nationalism is something that people hold dear and it is actually a positive thing if not carried to the extreme. When nationalism is extreme, then revolution is inevitable and there is a reduced chance for peace. This is because tolerance must prevail in a world of different beliefs. For example, in the world today, it is known that there are human rights abuses. At the same time, the world to some extent tolerates certain activities because they realize that to some degree, autonomy must prevail. Should women be executed for adultery? Most think not, but the world has to choose its battles. A womans life may not be as important as saving six millions Jews from the gas chamber. At the same time, other claim that to make a point, one must go against other nations. Nationalism is implicated in such scenarios. Extreme nationalism is exemplified by Nazi but fascism more than Nazism seems to prompt this paradigm. Quite often, leaders will exacerbate nationalism and propel it to great heights. Sometimes it is used for evil, but at other times, nationalism may be a positive thing. In a biography about Otto Von Bismarck of Germany, which is found in Wikipedia, the following remark appears: " ...
