the fact that there are disagreements. Generally speaking, nationalism is something that is entrenched in a variety of situations. It is something that people hold dear and it is actually
a positive thing if not carried to the extreme. When nationalism is extreme, then revolution is inevitable and there is a reduced chance for peace. This is because tolerance must
prevail in a world of different beliefs. Nationalism, according to a student, had been a key cause in the unification of Germany and Italy. Quite often, leaders
will exacerbate nationalism and propel it to great heights. Sometimes it is used for evil, but at other times, nationalism may be a positive thing. Otto Von Bismarck of
Germany and Giuseppe Garibaldi of Italy are two leaders who held nationalist views. When examining the unification of Italy for example, it is agreed by many that Garibaldi was
integral in its development and it was in part propelled by nationalism. It was in fact related to his military prowess. One gets a sense that Garibaldi would guide the
people militarily but it was not autocracy that would rule, but rather instilling a sense of nationalism. Garibaldi was first and foremost a military man and it should be noted
that often, in order to prompt nationalism, military involvement is necessary. Sometimes this is not the case. While it would be that nationalism is aligned with militarism in Italy, the
story is much different in Germany. Bismarck was very different from Garibaldi. He was not a military man but would need to use force, at least some of the time.
