of multiple identities or does the nation have a single identity? Controversy is often raised when issues of hyphenated Americans comes up. After all, some say, one should call
themselves Americans and not African-Americans or Asian-Americans. Yet others want to retain the identity associated with their ethnic, religious or racial origins. Which paradigm is correct? A student writing on
this subject might want to note that no one way is necessarily right. In fact, the two can co-exist. Americans can have a sense of nationalism as well as the
ability to retain their sense of identity. America is a melting pot, and people should be able to hang on to their roots, but they should recognize that national identity
is important too. Yet, in embracing this model, or any of the others, it is important to keep in mind that there are positive and negative features and some questions
